Mode guide

How to play Quote mode

Quote mode shows a line from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and you have to work out who said it. The mode's 76 lines come straight from the game's localisation files, word for word, and are spread across 13 characters. On the English version of the site you read the line from the game's English version; on the French site, the French one. The two are not literal translations of each other, as the tone and wordplay were adapted.

Playing a round

  1. Read the framed line at the top of the page.
  2. Type the name of the character you think said it. You can guess any character from the full roster, mobs included, even though only a few of them have lines.
  3. Each guess adds a row marked ✓ if it is the right character, ✕ if not. The category and role of your guess are shown under its name.
  4. Keep going until you find it; there is no limit on guesses.

Progressive clues

If the answer is slow to come, the game gives you a nudge about the character you are looking for:

Missed guessesClue revealed
2Their category (Human, Gestral, Creature…)
4Their role (Playable, NPC, Boss…)
6Their zone of first appearance

After your first miss, a reminder tells you that the category clue arrives with the next missed guess.

Recognising a voice

The lines fall into two families. Battle cries are short, usually an order or a taunt thrown out mid-fight: they come from the expedition members who fight at your side. Dialogue excerpts are longer and more personal, and belong to the heroes as well as to characters such as Sophie or Renoir. Verbal habits help too: some characters speak about themselves in the third person, others shout in capital letters. Each character's style is covered in the Quote mode guide.

An example

Today's line is “So much Power!”. It sounds like a battle cry. You try Gustave, then Maelle: two misses, and the category clue appears: Gestral. In the whole roster, only three characters are Gestrals: Monoco, Noco and Golgra. A shout in the heat of battle from a Gestral who fights within the expedition: it is Monoco.

How the quote of the day is picked

The line is drawn from the day number, counted from the game's release on 24 April 2025, and it is the same for everyone. The draw simply avoids repeating yesterday's quote. It changes at midnight, your device's local time. In free mode you get a random line, never today's.

Limitations

The pool only holds lines whose speaker is certain: in the game files, each line of dialogue is tied to its character. That explains the small number of speakers. Some battle cries are very short and can feel interchangeable, which is precisely what makes the mode hard. Lines are reproduced as they are, punctuation included; only the subtitle line breaks have been replaced with spaces.

Frequently asked questions

Are the lines accurate?
Yes. They are extracted from the game's localisation files, in English and in French, and attributed using the dialogue identifiers. Only the subtitle line breaks have been replaced with spaces.
Why does the text change when I switch to French?
The site shows the line from each language version of the game. The English and French versions do not always say the same thing word for word.
How many characters can be the answer?
13 characters have at least one line in this mode, but you can guess any of the 114 characters in the roster.
When do the clues appear?
After 2 missed guesses for the category, 4 for the role and 6 for the zone of first appearance.
Does Quote mode have its own streak?
Yes: streak, best streak and number of wins are counted separately for each mode.
