Mode guide

How to play Classic mode

Classic mode asks you to find the character of the day among the 35 figures of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 who play a part in the story: the expedition members, the NPCs, the bosses and the optional bosses. Ordinary mobs and chromatic variants are left out; they are waiting for you in Complete mode. There is no limit on guesses, and every guess brings you closer by revealing six clues.

Playing a round

  1. Start typing a name in the input field. The search ignores accents and accepts English and French names alike: “lampmaster” and “maitre” both bring up the Lampmaster.
  2. Pick a suggestion with the mouse, or with the arrow keys and Enter. Each suggestion shows the character's portrait, category and role.
  3. A new row appears at the top of the grid: the portrait and name of your guess, followed by six coloured cells.
  4. Keep going until you find the answer. Today's round is saved on your device, so you can close the tab and pick it up later.

The six clues

ColumnWhat it comparesPossible values
CategoryWhat the character isHuman, Nevron, Gestral, Axon, Creature
RoleTheir place in the gamePlayable, NPC, Boss, Optional Boss
GenderThe gender the game gives themMale, Female, Unknown
AffiliationThe groups they belong toExpedition 33, Lumière, Gestrals, Axons, Nevrons…

ZoneWhere they first appearLumière, Spring Meadows, The Monolith, The Continent…

Reading the colours

  • Green: the clue is exact; the answer has the same value. A small ✓ appears in the corner of the cell.
  • Orange: a partial match. Only Affiliation and Combat, which hold lists, can turn orange: your guess shares at least one value with the answer, but the two lists are not identical. The corner shows ◐.
  • Red: nothing in common.

The corner symbols let you read the grid without relying on colour alone. Above the grid, the “Last try” line sums up your latest guess with a row of six diamonds: each lit diamond stands for an exact clue.

A sample round

Say the answer is the Évêque and you open with Renoir, one of the two first guesses that rule out the most candidates on average according to the first-guess analysis. The grid shows: Category red, Role green (Boss), Gender red, Affiliation red, Combat red and Zone red.

In plain words: the answer is a story boss, but neither human nor male. It belongs neither to the Dessendre family nor to Expedition Zero, fights with neither a sword nor Chroma, and does not first appear on the Dark Shores. Only six candidates fit: the Évêque, Goblu, the Lampmaster, the Ultimate Sakapatate, the Dualliste and Glissando.

A second guess on the Lampmaster gives four greens (Category, Role, Gender and Affiliation), an orange Combat cell (Magic is shared) and a red Zone: only the Évêque is left. The round ends on the third guess.

How the daily character is picked

Everyone gets the same character on the same day. The pick is computed in your browser from the day number, counted from the game's release on 24 April 2025: that is the expedition number painted in red above the game. Once drawn, a character cannot come back within the next seven days, and the puzzle changes at midnight, your device's local time. The article on the daily draw explains the details.

Limitations

Role, gender and zone come from the game files: the enemies' boss status and the main quest, the gender the game gives each character, the official location names. Category, affiliation and fighting style, on the other hand, are a hand-made classification, cross-checked against the game's skills and dialogue. The zone records where a character is first seen, cutscenes included, even if they turn up elsewhere later. Characters added by the “Thank You” update were checked the same way. If a cell looks wrong to you, report it.

Frequently asked questions

When does the character of the day change?
At midnight, your device's local time. Once you have found the answer, a countdown in the victory panel shows how long is left before the next character.
How many guesses do I get?
As many as you need. The number of guesses only appears in your shared result; it has no effect on your streak.
Why is an Affiliation or Combat cell orange?
Your guess shares at least one value with the answer without having exactly the same list. Gustave (Expedition 33, Lumière) against Sophie (Lumière), for instance, gives an orange Affiliation.
Can a mob or a chromatic variant be the answer?
No. Classic mode only contains heroes, NPCs, bosses and optional bosses. To play with the 34 mobs and the 45 chromatic variants as well, switch to Complete mode.
What does an “Unknown” gender mean?
That the game classes the character as neuter, neither male nor female. This is the case for nearly all Nevrons, but also for Visages and the Ultimate Sakapatate: 14 of the 35 characters in this mode.
Does free mode count towards my stats?
No. It draws a random character, never today's answer, and you can play as many rounds as you like without touching your streak.
